Abstract

The wireless underground sensor network (WUSN) is one of the capable application areas of the recently emerging wireless sensor network (WSN) techniques. Though, WUSN is treated as the expansion of applications of WSN in the underground (UG) environment, soil being the important portion of the communication path makes the implementation challengeable. The change in attenuation loss due to inherent characteristics of soil is a major contribution towards the total path loss experienced by a signal travelling in WUSN. More specifically in agricultural application of WUSN, besides moisture the presence of chemical fertilizer also plays an important role towards contributing the loss. In this work, the path loss is computed considering the soil being mixed with chemical fertilizers. The signal path loss seems to be maximum when the fertilizer content is high according to the findings of this work.
