Abstract
Childhood is the most crucial stage of human life. Children continue to absorb a significant amount of information from their experiences and environment. Safe, secured, stimulating environment and nurturing atmosphere are the prerequisite for the all-round development of the children. War and armed conflict are the most devastating events known to humankind cause grave consequences immediately and in longer term. Death, injuries of innocent civilians, coupled with severe loss of infrastructure, experiences of torture, abuse and violence are common in such situations where children become the victim. Children experience profound impacts affecting their health, behaviour, learning, and social relationships. Children require many facilities such as safe schools, nutritional diet, health facilities, happy homes and pleasurable connection with neighbours and nature to live a healthy life. The endeavours to create a world suitable for children, including for those affected by armed conflict, various safeguards and provisions are available. The International Convention on Rights of the Children (1989) and numerous United Nations Security Council Resolutions for the protection of children in armed conflict have created a solid foundation. Yet, the problems are increasing, and a strong commitment from local to a global level by all concerned stakeholders is very crucial. This chapter examines the impact of armed conflict on children and different policies and strategies that are adopted for the rehabilitation of the children to facilitate protection and well-being. With special reference to the children living in Jammu and Kashmir’s border conflict-affected zone, the chapter has formulated a few recommendations to facilitate well-being for the children affected by war and armed conflicts.
