Shipwreck Archaeology in China Sea

Part of the book series: The Archaeology of Asia-Pacific Navigation ((AAPN,volume 5))

Abstract

The underwater archaeology work in Zhangzhou waters began in 2001. After underwater archaeological investigations and excavations, more than 10 underwater cultural relic sites have been found in Zhangzhou waters. Amongst, there are some important sites, including the Longhai Banyang Jiao No. 1 shipwreck, Zhangpu Shazhou Island shipwreck, Shengbei Yu shipwreck, Dongshan Donggu Bay shipwreck etc. These shipwrecks are dated ranging from mid Southern Song Dynasty to late Qing Dynasty. Many ceramics have been unwatered. These archaeological sources provide substantial materials for the study of maritime history, export ceramics, shipbuilding history and so on.
