Abstract

The Yujinyuan Garden in Bianliang (Kaifeng), the capital of the Northern Song dynasty, was a royal archery enclosure and a place frequented by the members of the imperial family. Here, the emperors of the Northern Song dynasty often held shooting competitions, known as “banquet archery (yanshe),” with Khitan envoys. The banquet provided an opportunity for archers from both sides to demonstrate prowess; at the same time, it also fulfilled a diplomatic function to promote friendship between the countries. Banquet archery can be regarded an early form of sport archery. At the same time, its cultural significance requires further investigation.
