Abstract
Academic striving, where students make intentional efforts toward their postsecondary success, is key to positively navigate higher education, with contributions beyond the degree. Yet, there is emerging literature suggesting that more nuanced understanding of striving is needed, with organizational changes also required to meet the unique needs of an increasingly diverse group of students, particularly African Americans. This chapter examines seminal and emerging evidence to discuss the lessons learned that may be applied to support a positive and holistic experience in higher education for African Americans.
