Abstract
This book is concerned with the relationships between education and the economy. It has looked at three main aspects of these relationships: first, how education has been positioned as a solution to economic problems; second, how neoliberal public sector reform has affected the delivery of education; and third, how the economy, and specifically the market, has come to be used as a model for thinking about education. I have argued that the goals claimed for education in much policy rhetoric today are misguided and unrealistic, and reflect a lack of willingness to tackle structural economic and political problems.
