Abstract
The aim of this work was to discover the fate of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) generated via PEP carboxykinase in the bundle sheath of the cool-temperate PEP-carboxykinase C4 plant Spartina anglica (Smith et al., 1982). Three alternative fates for this PEP in PEP-carboxykinase C4 plants have been proposed. First, it could be converted via pyruvate kinase or a phosphatase to pyruvate. Pyruvate and/or alanine would move to the mesophyll where pyruvate would be converted back to PEP via pyruvate, Pi dikinase (Hatch and Kagawa, 1976; Hatch, 1979). Second, it could be converted via enolase and phosphoglyceromutase to 3-phosphoglycerate. This would move to the mesophyll where it would be converted back to PEP via the same enzymes (Huber and Edwards, 1975). Third, PEP itself could move to the mesophyll (Rathnam and Edwards, 1977).
