Significance of Green Particles (Glaucony, Berthierine, Chlorite) in Arenites

Provenance of Arenites

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 148))

Abstract

The green particles encountered in marine sediments allow us to deduce some aspects of their depositional environment. Critical to this diagnosis are : (i) a precise identification of the green facies, (ii) a thorough understanding of the conditions leading to the genesis of the particular green facies encountered, and (iii) the distinction of in situ, perigenic and reworked grains. In present day seas, three facies (glaucony, marine “berthierine” and marine chlorite, all characterised by Fe-rich clays) are being generated. By a consideration of their various environments of deposition, we discuss a general model for the genesis of green particles and propose a scheme to categorise the different facies in terms of global sedimentary sequences.
