Abstract
Rice (Oryza sativa L) is the most widely grown cereal cultivated in more than 147 million hectares worldwide. Rice seed is known to be colonised by various types of fungi, among which many are identified as plant pathogens. The infected seed not only affects the quality of the grain but also spreads the seed-borne pathogens to different regions. Rice is known to be attacked by 56 fungal pathogens (Ou, 1985), of which 41 are reported to be seed-borne (Richardson, 1979,1981). Wei (1957) reported a number of fungal species on rice responsible for grain discoloration. Sevilla and Mamicpic (1988) reported 70 fungi as seed-borne on rice in the Philippines. A comprehensive list of fungi associated with rice seed is given in Table 1.
