Abstract
In this chapter I specify the type of economic activities that are in the focus of this study, identify core concepts of economics and assess features of economic models that prove central for the analysis of economy-environment interactions. The identification of core concepts is provided in the next section, followed by an assessment of the treatment of time in economic decisions and the role of discount rates in resource use. The main issues surrounding the role of economic concepts raised in this chapter are illustrated by two well-known dynamic models of natural resource use. Empirical studies inspired by these models are discussed briefly.
