Abstract
The sea is an unsteady place and if you go out on a ship to make measurements of the vertical fluxes of momentum, heat, moisture or gas, that unsteadiness will cause complications. To make direct flux measurements, using e.g. the eddy-correlation (ec) technique, you need to know the undisturbed vertical wind speed w, measured with a sufficiently high sample frequency to cover most of the spectral range of eddies, which in practice boils down to a measurement frequency of at least 10Hz. Measuring the wind with that frequency is a routine affair with an instrument like a sonic anemometer. But it’s not that simple to derive w from the measured data. First of all the movements of the ship have to be corrected for and it is only recently that this problem can be solved by the use of precision inertial navigation systems that allow you to make sufficiently precise corrections for the ship’s movements. This has succesfully been done so far by Donelan et al. (1997) and Fairall et al. , (1997). In this way we can get a good approximation to the vertical wind, but what we need is w, the undisturbed vertical wind and the next problem is to find a place on board a ship where the flow is not severely disturbed, either by the main body or by individual obstructions, such as masts, in the neighborhood of your wind sensor. Even worse: the movements of the ship reorient the ship continuously with respect to the mean wind, causing a time-dependent flow distortion.
