Abstract
This book has given a brief outline of those features of the structure, properties and processing of wood that are of particular importance for wood use. It is impossible to cover all sources of variation, or to describe more than a small part of the curious and sometimes bizarre features that may be encountered in any timber species. Ask any old craftsman to describe the variation that he has encountered within the limited number of commercial timbers that provide for his livelihood and you will be amazed at the diversity he recognizes.
