Abstract

The name “Antarctic Ocean” or “Southern Ocean” is used frequently for convenience in oceanographic literature to designate the circumpolar water ring around the Antarctic Continent, from which the three major oceans spread northward. It was internationally (Int. Hydr. Bu., 1937) agreed to extend the three major oceans to the Antarctic Continent and to choose the meridians running through the south tips of the respective land masses as boundaries between these oceans: the meridian of Cape Agulhas (20°E), the meridian of South East Cape in Tasmania (147 °E) and the shortest connection between Cape Horn — South Shetland Island — Deception Island — Antarctic Peninsula or Palmer Peninsula (in British usage also: Graham Land). Thus, we may distinguish between the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific sectors of the Antarctic Ocean, respectively.

The material on which this review is based was derived, in part, from work supported by grants from the National Science Foundation.
