Abstract

Just as in other countries, till the eighteenth century most surgeons were barber-surgeons. Only relatively lately has surgery became a separate and independent profession. At the end of the Middle Ages and in the beginning of the new era surgeons were often gathered in the same guild with such craftsmen as shoemakers or carpenters.
