Abstract

For its eighty years’ war with Spain (1568-1648) the young Dutch Republic needed a rather big army with field surgeons in its service. The King-Stadtholder Willem III improved the medical and pharmaceutical service with the help of Govert Bidloo, who acted as general inspector. After the Napoleontic area the military medical service was reorganized and a military medical school was established at Utrecht in order to provide a special training for the medical officers. In this chapter are also included sections on military hospitals, military pharmacy, the transport and nursing of wounded soldiers and on the Red Cross.
