Abstract
As we have indicated in the introduction, a common effect of pressure is to shift the energy of one type of orbital with respect to another. Usually one measures the shift by optical absorption although other techniques, such as Mössbauer resonance, may give useful information. In this chapter we describe a variety of such shifts: relatively localized transitions such as those involving the d electrons of transition metals; excitations involving color centers in alkali halide crystals, or π electrons in aromatic hydrocarbon crystals; charge transfer between donors and acceptors in molecular complexes or between ligand and metal in transition metal complexes; and finally, excitations from the valence band to the conduction band in insulators and semiconductors. In the following chapters we discuss orbital energy shifts which lead specifically to new ground states in a variety of systems.
