Abstract
The use of chemostat or continuous cultures to study a microorganism at the steady state provides a rigorous experimental approach for the quantitative evaluation of the microorganism’s physiology and metabolism. In addition, chemostat cultures allow definition of the phase of behaviour which suits a purpose that we may fix ourselves — for example, maximum substrate consumption and output fluxes of metabolic by-products of interest.
