Abstract
The question about the relationship between general or academic education on the one side and vocational education on the other was first asked in Germany at the end of the 18th century. The increase of output in manufactories and in commerce made it necessary to develop some systematic form of schooling for business and technical purposes. These new approaches introduced the problem of how to embed the new schools, which started treating ‘realia’ (practical matters) within the overall school system. Following the disastrous defeat by Napoleon in 1806 there were sweeping political and social reforms in Germany, and especially in Prussia. Changes in the school system were part of these reforms.
