Stratocumulus-Topped Atmospheric Planetary Boundary Layer

Abstract

Marine stratocumulus often occurs over the subtropical oceans off the west coasts of the major continents throughout most of the summertime season when the large-scale subsiding motion is strong and the ocean surface is cold. This large-scale condition leads to a very moist, shallow planetary boundary layer (PBL). The lifting condensation level is below the top of the mixed layer, so an uniform layer of cloud can form in the upper part of the PBL.
