Abstract
Molecular clouds, the cradles of star birth, are supported against self-gravity in part by magnetic fields (McKee, this volume). In 1956, Mestel & Spitzer (see also Mestel 1965) introduced a mass scale associated with the amount of magnetic flux Φ threaded by a self-gravitating, electrically conducting, cloud.
