Abstract
During the copolymerization of styrene and maleic anhydride (MA) at high temperatures (>100°C) formation of oligomers occurs. The oligomers are mainly dimers and trimers of styrene (and MA) and are cyclic or contain one unsaturation. The oligomers are not formed by the regular Diels-Alder reaction, which underlies the formation of oligomers in other styrene polymerizations, for instance homopolymerization or copolymerization with acrylonitrile and MA (at temperatures >100 °C).
