Abstract
Continuum mechanics is that part of physical science dealing with the deformation and motion of continuous material media under the influence of external agencies. The foundations of the theory involve laws of motion and constitutive laws that are conveniently stated in terms of tensors. As a mathematical entity, a tensor has an existence independent of any coordinate system, yet it may be specified in a particular coordinate system by a certain set of quantities known as its components. Components of a tensor in different coordinate systems are related by the law of transformations, to be elaborated later.
