Pairing Interactions in Neutron Stars

Neutron Stars: Theory and Observation

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 344))

Abstract

A microscopic theory for calculating 1 S 0-pairing gaps for neutrons and protons in neutron star matter is presented. While short-range correlations are treated in a semi-empirical way, long-range fluctuations are incorporated consistently by solving coupled two-body equations for the particle-hole interaction and the scattering amplitude at the Fermi surface. The solutions determine the quasiparticle effective mass and the pairing matrix element from which the gaps are found in weak coupling BCS-theory. Implications for neutron star models are briefly discussed.
