Abstract
The planetary scale atmospheric circulation of the tropics is dominated by the mean meridional Hadley cells of the two hemispheres (Section 3.3). The descending portions of these cells and the associated anticyclonic axes in the lower troposhere provide a natural delineation of the poleward extremities of the tropical atmosphere. Accordingly, the discussion of regional circulation systems in this chapter will in Sections 6.3 to 6.6 proceed from the realm of the subtropical anticyclones of both hemispheres, over the trade wind regimes, to the equatorial trough zone and associated confluence and convergence belts. The focus will be on the atmosphere, although it will on occasion become necessary to refer to the hydrospheric portion of the coupled system.
