Cyprinid Fishes

Part of the book series: Fish & Fisheries Series ((FIFI,volume 3))

Abstract

The literature dealing with interactions among cyprinids and between cyprinids and other groups of fishes is enormous, so it would be impossible to cover all species here. Instead, I have chosen to focus on a smaller number of mainly European species with the aim of advancing some general patterns concerning interactions between cyprinids and other fish species. Indeed, in many parts my treatment will only deal with the interactions between roach, Rutilus rutilus, and perch, Perca fluviatilis, because these two species are the most thoroughly studied, and the interactions between them reflect at least to some extent the general pattern of interactions between cyprinids and other groups. Furthermore, although field studies and laboratory experiments exist for other cyprinids, conclusive field experimental evidence is extremely rare. Because cyprinids achieve their greatest levels of dominance in lakes, especially productive ones, the focus of this chapter will be on lake systems.
