Abstract
Cyprinids are a diverse family, rich in problems of evolutionary interest. Their use in aquaculture and as tools for genetic and physiological investigations make their identification very important. Unfortunately, their taxonomy and classification is unsatisfactory; the historical reasons are discussed here and a revised classification is presented. First, a brief overview of cyprinid anatomy, diversity and ecology is given.
