Abstract
Various methods for testing for material composition, material properties and chemical properties are used as indicators in nondestructive testing. The major effect is that of changes of the dielectric constant of the material. If losses in materials do not change (as, for example, with curing degree in some materials), then only the real part of the dielectric constant causes measurable changes. More often, both real and imaginary parts vary (i.e. the loss tangent varies) and can be used for testing. Although the permeability of materials may also change this is less common than changes in dielectric constant. Thus, measurements based on monitoring material properties are most often based on variations dielectric constant. This, in turn, causes changes in reflection, transmission and attenuation constants. These can be tested using the methods described in the previous two chapters or, as will be shown shortly, using resonant techniques.
