Abstract
The finite element method is now introduced for solution of time harmonic fields where the method is most efficient. The various forms of the wave equation in the frequency domain are formulated in terms of the finite element method, using scalar shape functions. The various methods for formulations applicable to high frequency fields are outlined together with the relevant finite elements. Specific formulations in two and three dimensions are given.
