Abstract

Olfaction plays an important role in teleost behaviour, such as feeding, social interaction, and migration (reviews: Kleerekoper, 1969; Hara, 1975, 1982, 1986; Liley, 1982; Döving, 1986; see also Chapters 11–13). Our understanding of the teleost olfactory system has increased rapidly during the last 10–15 years, through investigation using physiological, anatomical and behavioural methods (reviews: Hara, 1975, 1982, 1986; Döving, 1986; Satou, 1990). Recent findings are concerned with (1) the organization of the olfactory bulb (Ichikawa, 1976; Kosaka and Hama, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982; Kosaka, 1980; Oka, 1983; Satou et al., 1983; Fujita et al., 1988) and of the telencephalic olfactory regions (Scalia and Ebbesson, 1971; Finger, 1975; Ichikawa, 1975; Oka, 1980; Bass, 1981a,b; Davis et al., 1981; Ebbesson et al., 1981; Murakami et al., 1983; Bartheld et al., 1984; Fujita et al., 1984; Levine and Dethier, 1985), and (2) specific odorants (pheromones) related to the reproductive functions and their effects on the olfactory system (Dulka et al., 1987; Sorensen et al., 1987, 1988; Stacey et al., 1987; Fujita et al., 1991). This chapter deals with structural and functional organization of the olfactory bulb, and its central projection.
