Abstract
A threatened species is one thought to be at significant risk of extinction in the foreseeable future, because of stochastic or deterministic factors affecting its populations, or by virtue of inherent rarity. This convenient working definition is deceptively simple; deciding what level of risk is significant, and what part of the future is foreseeable, is problematic.
