Abstract
Lice are permanent ectoparasites of warm-blooded animals. They are remarkably specific in their choice of host, each species of louse being confined to one particular species of animal or bird, away from which they are unable to survive for more than a few hours. Lice are classified according to their feeding habit. Those that chew skin, fur and feathers are in the order Mallophaga (Fig. 10.1), with the head broader than the abdomen, those that suck blood are in the Anoplura (Fig. 10.2), with the head narrower than the abdomen.
