Abstract

A survey is presented of the range of microstructures which may be developed in Si3N4 and Sialon ceramics by liquid phase sintering and post-sintering heat treatment. The mechanical behaviour, oxidation and corrosion resistance of these microstructures is reviewed and the various mechanisms for environmental degradation are identified. A specific problem is exemplified for the catastrophic strength — loss of Sialons under oxidation/corrosion conditions.

It is concluded that microstructural design has to be a compromise between mechanical and environmental behaviour and also ease of fabrication. Pressureless — sintered Sialons with α’ /ß’/YAG microstructures offer a good compromise for sub-1300°C performance. In the 13001500°C interval the non-sialon compositions (such as Si3N4/Y2Si2O7) produce environmentally stable microstructures with good mechanical behaviour if fabricated under HIP or GPS conditions.
