Abstract
Some issues relating to the fluid mechanics of plumes from ocean sewage outfalls are discussed. For many ocean sewage outfalls, the details of the diffuser are not important and most of the gross wastefield characteristics can be predicted by approximating the discharge to be a line source of buoyancy flux only, i.e. a line plume. Experiments utilizing laser-induced fluorescence show that a considerable amount of additional mixing and dilution can occur in the transition from vertical to horizontal flow, and this subsequent dilution is not included in present mathematical models. The initial dilution continues to increase with distance from the source until the discharge-induced turbulence collapses; this distance can be large. The fluid mechanics of transition mixing and turbulence collapse are not well understood.
