Abstract
Humpback whales breaching in the sea, gooey slicks from massive oil spills, strange machines for underwater marine research, unsightly litter and plastics on the beaches — through environmental education efforts, these are now well-known images in some areas. But for many people and cultures around the world, the oceans are still mostly ‘out of sight and out of mind’. Yet we know that the lands and the waters are both critical parts of the ecological functioning of this planet. Ocean weather, currents and food webs greatly influence land habitats, organisms and geophysical processes.
