Abstract

The difficulty of evaluating small visual field losses is an important problem in ophthalmology BABEL et al. (1969) have proposed the use of flicker fusion thresholds, as plotted by DE LANGE, for detection and quantification of macular and perimacular visual field losses. The conclusion was that two thresholds only may express in central fixation the gravity and extension of a macular visual field loss. In every case examined, this method showed a greater sensitivity, than VA and kinetic perimetry. To evaluate the importance of a visual field loss, as well to determine its retinal or retrobul-bar origin, the ophthalmologist has to compare perceptual responses with objective ones such as ERG and VER, each being obtained under different conditions of stimulation and apparently not suited to give information on the same retinal mechanisms.
