Occupational Strain and Efficacy: Costs, Theory, and Intervention

Abstract

Organisations have become increasingly concerned about the issue of work stress because of the costly negative consequences to both the worker and the organisation. Reduced performance, increased absenteeism, mistakes, and sick days, are some organisational outcomes that have serious economic consequences for the organisation. For the worker, increased psychological distress, job dissatisfaction, and increased symptoms of burnout and physical illness, can result from exposure to hazardous psychosocial work conditions.
