Abstract
The steps required to make a box model of the important reservoirs and fluxes in the global geochemical cycle of carbon dioxide are detailed in a series of equations and diagrams. A summary schematic model is constructed that permits material transfer between various sedimentary reservoirs without changing the CO2 content of the atmosphere or of the ocean. Then the actual present-day reservoirs and fluxes of various carbonates and silicates are presented, and discussed in terms of controls of atmospheric CO2 fluctuation caused by inorganic processes.
