Abstract
I was requested to introduce the contribution of Professor Theil by mentioning his field of scientific work and the contributions made by him, as well as by staff members of the Econometric Institute at this university. Before making an attempt to do so let me explain why I cannot live up to this request in a satisfactory way. In the twenty-five years elapsed since the creation of the Econometric Institute its field of work -econometrics - expanded enormously, just as many other fields of science did. Just as we had, for example, a specialization of physics on astrophysics, a specialization of economics on the economics of education or a branch of psychology called economic psychology, econometrics showed a range of specializations.
