Abstract
In this contribution the measurableness of animal welfare is discussed. For that purpose a number of abnormal behaviours in farm animals are described briefly, and classified. The evaluation of these categories of abnormal behaviour can be evaluated if one is explicit about the organisation of normal behaviour. Two models are discussed: the psychohydraulic and the regulatory one. It appears that the latter model offers the best perspectives in animal welfare research, if one wants to integrate ethological and physiological approaches. Some rules of thumb are given to evaluate ethologically the weight of Sollwerte.
