Abstract
In Chapter 3 it was mentioned that the specification for a standard long absolute machinability test became available in 1977—this is embodied in standards ISO 3685–1977 and BS 5623:1979. In this chapter a brief resumé is given of the main recommendations of the ISO 3685–1977 standard in an attempt to familiarise the reader with the concepts of the machinability test standards. For those who intend to carry out machinability testing to the standard specification it is recommended that a copy of the full standard be obtained from the appropriate body.
