Abstract
Tidal currents acting on their own are competent to move sand on large parts of the continental shelf around the British Isles and other strongly tidal shelves at appreciable rates for appreciable percentages of the total time. Furthermore, when aided by other water movements, sand can be moved over most of the areas of such continental shelves. Gravel can also be moved in strong-current areas.
