Abstract
Early investigations of the Earth’s moment of inertia I, summarized in §5.6, used equations, e.g. (5.27), from Clairaut’s theory which involve the internal variation of the density p. The investigations were therefore accompanied by attention to the question of model representations of the variation of p and related properties of the Earth’s interior. By the time I had become moderately well determined, it was possible to set down Earth density models that were useful for a variety of limited purposes. The early models had two parameters which could be determined from the known values of I and the radius a and mass M of the Earth. The present chapter is concerned with some of the early models and related theory, more particularly with results which have a bearing on later developments
