Abstract
Knowledge of values of the Earth’s radius a, mass M, and moment of inertia Iprovides two criteria (§6.6) which must be satisfied by any acceptable representation of the Earth’s internal density (ρ) distribution. As seen in Chapter 6, these criteria can be satisfied by widely different density distributions. When seismology began to provide values of the P and S velocities α and β for specific values of z, it became possible to narrow the allowable density distributions. An early application of seismic data to the density problem has been described in §6.9.2. The present chapter will be concerned with developments over the period 1936–42, leading to a close first approximation to the Earth’s density distribution
