Abstract
In this chapter we investigate the properties of complex functions that are assumed to be differentiable, not just at an isolated point, but throughout an open set. We obtain a spectacular sequence of results, most of them quite unlike any theorems applying to real functions. This is one of the classic theories of Mathematics — there is perhaps no other instance in which a comparable succession of good theorems is obtained with such ease and elegance.
