Abstract
The development of improved stress analysis techniques allows a reduction of safety factors and consequently an increase of service stress levels. As a result there is a larger chance that cracks develop from existing flaws and discontinuities. The use of modern, high strength materials with relatively low crack resistance introduces the additional problems that cracks grow fast, and that the remaining strength decays rapidly. If structural weight is of importance safety factors are further reduced, and the occurrence of cracks is even more likely.
