Abstract
From a review of recent literature on coastal barrier environments, the methods and techniques used to derive former sea-level positions from barrier deposits are discussed. These comprise: 1) coastal morphology, 2) lacquer peels of cores from recent coastal sediments and fossil barrier deposits, 3) depth distribution of sedimentary structures and shells along the present coast, and 4) sequences observed in deep, open pits in barrier sands. The discussion is largely based on work carried out in the coastal area of the western Netherlands. Examples are given to infer former high and low tide levels and from these the amount of sea-level rise over a given period of time.
