Abstract
April 26, 1956, was a rainy, cool day in Port Newark, New Jersey, not unlike many other spring days in the New York area. The departure for Houston, Texas, of the partially converted World War II vintage T-2 tanker Ideal X was very much of a routine affair, except for one thing. That one thing was destined to change deep-sea shipping practice around the world, but like other strokes of commercial genius it was not recognized at the time as being of any real significance.
