Abstract
The fact that an “International Congress for the Unity of Science” takes place every year shows clearly that there is great interest in the idea of putting the scientific spirit at the service of scientitic synthesis.1 At the Paris Congress of 1935 it was decided that future congresses would sponsor the project of an International Encyclopedia of Unified Science, which had been the special topic of discussion at that congress.2 The organizing committee of the encyclopedia (Carnap, Frank, Jørgensen, Morris, Neurath, Rougier) was able to do so much preparatory work that they were able to conclude the necessary arrangements for publication with the University of Chicago Press in early 1937.3 The third congress was held from July 29 to 31 as an encyclopedia conference, since other questions connected with the “unity of science” could be dealt with later at the International Congress of Philosophy in a separate section of that congress.
