Abstract

This introductory chapter presents the central question at issue for this study. The problem concerns the description of the goals of mathematics education in the elementary school, as seen in the context of innovation. The leading question is:

How should mathematics education goals be described to someone who is not, or is insufficiently, acquainted with this type of education?
