Abstract
High-frequency acoustic backscattering data are inverted to determine the dependence of subsurface bubble populations on wind speed, resonant bubble radius, surficial water temperature, and the proximity of land. Relationships of bubble densities with resonant radius and wind speed are found to compare favorably with the results of previous studies. No dependence on surface water temperature is apparent for temperatures ranging from 12 to 25° C. However, a strong dependence on the proximity to land masses is evident, with bubble densities in coastal waters being almost an order of magnitude greater than those in the open ocean at elevated wind speeds.
